Instrument Housings

Enclosures and chassis for sensors, analyzers, and lab instruments—display cutouts, EMI-friendly seams, mounting bosses.

Instrument Housings

From blank to enclosure

  1. 1

    Body & lid planning

We review seam style, fastener map, gasket grooves, and hinge or captive-screw intent so the lid closes square and service techs can open it without fighting the design.

  2. 2

    Pocket & wall milling

Internal cavities, bosses, and ribs are milled from billet or plate. We watch minimum wall and rib draft so the box stays stiff without ringing like a tin can.

  3. 3

    Cutouts, threads & inserts

Display windows, connector holes, PEM/Helicoil bosses, and board standoffs are completed to print—aligned to your panel components when you share vendor cutout drawings.

  4. 4

    Finish & dry-fit

Anodize or powder as specified; we dry-fit lids and critical inserts before ship when the quote includes a fit check. Masking keeps connector lands conductive when needed.

  5. 5

    Labeling & pilot support

Engraving, silk-screen prep, or laser-mark windows can be added. Pilot lots reuse fixtures so Rev-locked enclosures stay consistent across a field-trial batch.

Common enclosure materials

Aluminum 6061-T6 — default for lab and portable instrumentsAluminum 7075 — when stiffness or hard-mount sensors need itStainless 304/316 — washdown, medical-adjacent, outdoorMild steel — cost-effective painted chassis and racksEngineering plastics (select jobs) — light covers and non-EMI shellsSheet-metal hybrid — CNC lids with formed bodies when that is cheaper

Instrument applications we quote

  • Benchtop analyzers Chassis with front-panel cutouts, card guides, and service lids for R&D and QC labs.
  • Sensor heads Compact shells with optic, probe, or gas ports; seal grooves when IP matters.
  • Portable field instruments Lightweight anodized boxes with gasketed lids and connector boots.
  • Control modules DIN-rail or panel-mount housings for automation cells and OEM controllers.
  • Optical / photonics benches Stiff decks and covers with flatness callouts for alignment-sensitive gear.
  • Medical & life-science prototypes Stainless or anodized aluminum with cleanable external radii—prototype volumes welcome.

Enclosure DFM tips

  • •Dimension connector cutouts from the same datum as the PCB mounts—or your board and panel won’t line up.
  • •Specify gasket groove size for the actual O-ring or IP gasket you buy; “looks sealed in CAD” is not a crush calculation.
  • •Tell us EMI needs early: conductive anodize wipe, chem-film, or gasket landing zones change finish plans.
  • •Avoid unsupported long thin walls; add ribs or accept a slightly thicker section for machining stability.

Fit & finish checks

  • ✓Lid flatness and fastener alignment spot-checked on sealed designs.
  • ✓Connector and display cutouts verified to print or vendor template.
  • ✓Thread and insert presence confirmed before cosmetic finish when sequence requires it.
  • ✓Cosmetic faces reviewed after anodize/powder for rack and customer-facing units.

Prototypes to pilot lots

Simple billet boxes often follow a one- to two-week prototype cadence after DFM. Add time for anodize colors, powder, or stainless. When you move from 1–2 pcs to a 10–25 pilot, ask for a lot price—fixture reuse usually drops unit cost without a hard tooling program.

Instrument housing FAQ

Can you hit IP-rated seals?

We machine gasket grooves and lands to your print. IP validation is your test responsibility; we’ll hold the groove geometry that makes that test possible.

Do you do sheet metal and CNC mixed?

Yes where it helps cost—formed bodies with CNC lids or panels are common. Tell us which faces need CNC precision versus bend tolerance.

What about EMI coating?

We can leave chem-film or conductive paths as specified and mask paint/anodize accordingly. Share the grounding scheme with the RFQ.
