Custom Gear Machining
Spur, helical, bevel, worm & timing pulleys
We machine gears and synchronous wheels for mid-size automation, robot joints, conveyors, and instrument drives. Send a drawing or STEP—most prototypes ship in days, not weeks.
Gear Types We Machine
Five practical families for power transmission and motion systems—no exotic showcase gears, just parts that fit your gearbox or belt drive.
Spur Gears
Straight-tooth gears for parallel shafts. Ideal for gearboxes, conveyors, and general machinery where cost and simplicity matter.
- Module / DP to print
- Steel, aluminum, acetal
- Keyways & set-screw hubs
- Prototype to small batch
Helical Gears
Angled teeth for quieter mesh and higher load capacity. Common in servo reducers and continuous-duty industrial drives.
- Helix angle per drawing
- Smoother than spur
- Steel & engineering plastics
- Paired left/right hands
Bevel Gears
Conical gears for intersecting shafts—typically 90°. Useful in right-angle gearboxes, hand tools, and robot wrist mechanisms.
- Straight & miter sets
- Matched pairs available
- Metal or plastic
- Hub & bore options
Worm Gears
Worm and worm-wheel sets for high reduction in a compact envelope. Popular in lifts, indexing tables, and self-locking drives.
- Worm + wheel as a set
- Bronze / steel / acetal
- High ratio, compact
- Backlash control options
Timing Pulleys & Synchronous Wheels
Toothed pulleys for GT, HTD, and T-series belts. Precise tooth pitch for steppers, linear stages, and packaging equipment.
- Common belt profiles
- Flanged & plain
- Aluminum & steel
- Bore, keyway, set screws
How We Machine Your Gears
A straightforward path from drawing to inspected parts.
Drawing & DFM review
We check module/DP, face width, bore/keyway, material, and heat-treat notes—and flag anything that will drive cost or scrap.
Blank prep & turning
Bars or plate blanks are turned for OD, hub, and bore so the gear blank is ready for tooth cutting.
Tooth cutting
Hobbing, shaping, or CNC milling depending on size, tooth form, and quantity. Timing pulleys are milled or hobbed to profile.
Finish & inspect
Deburr, optional grind/heat treat, then check tooth thickness, runout, and critical dimensions before pack-out.
Typical Gear Capabilities
| Capability | Detail |
|---|---|
| Materials | Carbon & alloy steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, acetal (POM), nylon |
| Tooth forms | Spur, helical, straight bevel/miter, worm & worm wheel, timing (GT/HTD/T) |
| Size range | Approx. Ø10–200 mm typical; larger on request |
| Tolerances | Bore/hub ±0.01–0.02 mm typical; tooth thickness to drawing (AGMA/DIN class on request) |
| Secondary ops | Keyways, set screws, heat treat, black oxide, anodize, grinding |
| Quantities | 1-off prototypes through low hundreds—honest lead times for each |
Gear Machining FAQ
Can you cut gears from my STEP file only?
A 2D drawing with module/DP, pressure angle, tooth count, and tolerances is strongly preferred. STEP alone often misses critical gear data—we can help fill gaps on a DFM call.
Do you hob or CNC-mill teeth?
Both. Hobbing/shaping suits many steel spur and helical jobs; CNC milling works well for prototypes, plastics, timing pulleys, and non-standard forms.
What backlash or quality class can you hold?
We quote to your drawing. Industrial AGMA/DIN classes are available on steel gears; for plastics and one-offs we focus on fit and measured backlash rather than marketing grades.
Can you supply matched bevel or worm sets?
Yes—send the ratio and center distance. We machine worm + wheel or bevel pairs together when mesh quality matters.
Ready for a gear quote?
Upload drawings or STEP files and tell us material, quantity, and target lead time. We reply with DFM notes and pricing for prototype or small-batch runs.
