Frequently Asked Questions

What sheet thicknesses can you work with?

Common work covers roughly 0.5–6 mm for laser + bend on steel/aluminum/stainless; thicker plate and specialty alloys are quoted case-by-case. Call thickness and grade on the RFQ.

Do you need flat patterns or 3D models?

Either works. STEP with formed model is preferred; DXF flat patterns help when bend deductions are already locked. We can review K-factor assumptions on request.

When should I use stamping vs laser + bend?

Laser + bend for prototypes and low–mid volumes. Stamping when annual volume supports tooling and piece-price matters. We can bridge with laser until dies are ready.

Can you install PEM nuts and hardware?

Yes—clinch nuts, studs, standoffs, and rivets are common on custom sheet metal programs. Call hardware callouts on the drawing.

What welding processes do you offer?

MIG and TIG are typical for steel and stainless; aluminum welding is project-based. Fixtured weldments and grind finishes can be quoted.

What surface finishes are available?

Powder coat, wet paint, zinc plating, anodize (aluminum), brush/polish, and passivation for stainless—availability depends on alloy and part size.

What tolerances should I expect?

Laser profiles and brake angles follow shop standards unless CTQs are marked. Tight fits often need secondary machining or adjusted bend allowances—call critical dims.

Do you claim aerospace or nuclear sheet-metal certifications?

No. We fabricate industrial and commercial sheet metal with soft capability language. Any regulated program requirements must be stated in the PO and QA plan.

Can you ship welded assemblies overseas?

Yes. Partsproto packs from China for overseas buyers—knock-down kits or welded assemblies with protective packaging.

How fast can prototypes ship?

Simple laser-cut and bent parts often move in about a week after DFM freeze; welded and coated assemblies take longer. Ask for rush options on the quote.

Sheet metal fabrication hub—what we offer

This hub covers laser cutting, CNC bending, stamping, welding, and full custom sheet metal assemblies.

Use child pages for process-specific DFM; use this page to choose cut/form/stamp/weld paths and RFQ packaging.

Partsproto fabricates in China for overseas buyers—material, finish, hardware, and export packing are quoted together.

  • → Enclosures, brackets, and panels from sheet stock
  • → Prototype laser+bend before stamp tooling
  • → Welded frames and fabricated assemblies
  • → Hardware-installed custom sheet metal kits

How a sheet metal program runs

1

Process select

Laser+bend vs stamp vs weldment based on volume and geometry.

2

DFM & flat pattern

Bend reliefs, hole-to-bend, and finish notes locked with quote.

3

Cut & form

Laser blanks, brake sequences, or stamp stages.

4

Join & finish

Weld, hardware, powder coat / plate as specified.

5

Inspect & ship

Dimensional checks, packing, overseas freight.

DFM tips before you RFQ sheet metal

  • •Keep hole-to-bend distance adequate—too close distorts holes.
  • •Add bend reliefs on flanges that meet; avoid trapped corners.
  • •Call grain direction for cosmetic brushed stainless.
  • •Specify hardware before coating when insert/clinch is required.
  • •For volume, ask when stamp tooling pays back vs laser nesting.

Inspection & QC

  • ✓Flat pattern / formed dimensions on CTQs.
  • ✓Bend angle checks on critical flanges.
  • ✓Weld visual criteria when assemblies are ordered.
  • ✓Coating thickness / adhesion notes when specified.
  • ✓Export packing photos on request.

Lead time & batch sizing

Simple laser-cut blanks can be quick; multi-bend boxes with powder coat typically need more calendar days. Stamp tooling adds upfront time then lowers piece price. Request 10 / 100 / 1,000 breaks for planning.
